The operating system can be easily understood on the basis of the following points: –
1: – The operating system (OS) is a software that provides an interface between user and computer. This is called system software.
2: – The operating system is a set of instructions that store the storage device. And it’s a group of programs that manage the resources and operations of computers.
3: – This is the first program to load into the OS computer. It is also called a program of programs.
4: – The operating system manages all the operations of the computer.
5: – There are two types of operating systems: –
- Character user interface (CUI)
- Graphical user interface (GUI)
Character user interface (CUI)
CUI is not user-friendly and always has to type the command to run this
Such as – DOS is a CUI operating system.
A graphical user interface (GUI)
The GUI operating system is user-friendly and commands are not required to run this operating system, but the program to open it has to be clicked with the mouse.
Such as – Windows is a GUI operating system.
6: – Operating system work is to run other programs and applications and it functions as a bridge between computer hardware and software.
7: – Without an operating system, a computer is useless.
8: – Multitask operating system runs very short programs at the same time. And the operating system determines which program will run when and how long it will run.

Computer without operating system
What will happen when the operating system is no longer there or how the computer would have been without the operating system, let’s try to understand such that you will be able to understand the operating system.
Operating systems provide us with a graphical interface or function for the user to access computer hardware.
If there is no operating system, then we have to do this through programs.
Whenever we have to access any hardware device, then we have to write a new program, we have to do it again and again whenever we have access to any device.
Without the operating system, if we want to print a file, then we cannot print it directly, for that we have to write the program and do it again and again whenever we have to print something from the printer.
Without an operating system, whenever we have to interact with computer hardware, we had to write programs to access that hardware repeatedly.
So we can say that operating systems are the same set of programs that we had to write repeatedly to access computer hardware.
